Maslow Hierarchy of Needs and Hedonic Treadmill

For this project, I was instructed to design an infographic about both Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Hedonic Treadmill.

1. Design an infographic, diagram, chart, or map, that communicates the concepts in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Infographic. Use unique imagery and concepts to communicate about wants and needs.

2. Design an infographic infographic, diagram, chart, or map, that communicates the concepts of the Hedonic Treadmill. Use unique imagery and concepts to communicate about the basics of wanting vs. needing and the cycle of desire.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.

From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: physiological (food and clothing), safety (job security), love and belonging needs (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization.

The hedonic treadmill, also known as hedonic adaptation, is the observed tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes.

For the concept of this project, I wanted to experiment with visuals that would complement both my color palette, use of imagery, and typography. I also wanted to utilize birds as a primary focus of this concept to represent both Maslow Hierarchy of Need and Hedonic Treadmill. However, I did face myraids of challenges to design a composition that would best complement both imagery and typography.

With the critique of the draft design from my classmates, I was able to find a solution to best represent to fit both imagery and typography for this project. I still wanted to utlize the bird and came up with the concept of a nest and the simplistic design of the nest to best express both Maslow and Hedonic Treadmill. For another attempt at the final result, I decided to play around with typography to express both my ideas and visuals.
